Devon Ecru is an emerging multimedia artist that uses forgotten objects to build shrines and alters that aim to connect viewers to other realms. Ecru is self-taught, refining their practice over the last 10 years living on Sinixt territory, though their love for wood began at a young age. As a child, they scavenged scrap wood and metal from construction sites and farms to build tree houses. As a teen, they started a business building unique flower planters. Now, Ecru likes to sift through their barn full of treasures to create one of a kind altars that are designed to display personal items. Their pieces are usually made on commission or can be found for sale at shows. Ecru curates displays on the shrines in gallery settings, sometimes integrating their audio production projects that can be listened to in headphones accompanying the piece.

"My work is a process of finding what has been hidden in plain sight. I am inspired by the way that things decay and are disposed of. I use scavenged objects organized into multimedia collage; broken Mirrors, splintered wood, thrifted metal. By combining different shapes and textures, I construct altars designed to display items that hold meaning through time.

Shrines invite the viewer to have an experience of connection. In a time where our environment is becoming an increasingly sterile, I feel called to create windows where the wisdom of the natural world can seep through. My work is a demonstration of how the energy of a space can be intentionally altered through the curation of objects on a shrine."
